The Wesley Porirua team works hard to grow the capacity of the local community to ensure Porirua is a good place to live. We work closely with many local agencies and support a wide variety of community driven initiatives.
The Wesley Porirua team offer a comprehensive, range of community based services. These include advocacy, counselling, a food bank and parenting services, social work services, youthwork and individual mentoring.
Youthwork
Our youth workers work with young people/youth to
- Provide individual programmes and mentoring
- Support young people into tertiary/vocation training or employment
- Design and deliver school-based programmes to meet specific needs
- Work alongside young people to ensure they access appropriate and good health services.
We also host a popular free Recreation Programme open to all young people, every Tuesday night from 6pm – 9pm in the Cannons Creek Opportunity Centre, 4 Mentor Lane (upstairs by The Cage) and every Thurday night at the Ratana Hall, 4 Loonganna St., Waitangirua.
Foodbank
Our Foodbank is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. All who need them are welcome to food parcels. If a person is experiencing ongoing difficulties our volunteer advocates are able to help them explore why this might be happening and possible solutions.
Good Cents
The Porirua based Good Cents initiative aims to help families struggling under the burden of high interest rates and debt through a combination of discussion groups, budgeting and even debt restructuring where this is apporpriate and possible.
Counselling
You can access high quality long and short term counselling at Wesley Porirua.
- We listen with respect and without judgement
- Help you explore what you want to change in your life
- Support you to learn how to do things differently
- Support you to develop your sense of well-being.
Payment is by way of a of a donation of goods to the Foodbank
Family support social work
With families/whanau our community support social worker …
- Provides practical and emotional support to families/whanau who have identified a need for assistance
- Help them to assess their situation and create a plan to support them
- Work towards families/whanau gaining control over their own circumstances
Advocacy
Our advocacy service …
- Encourages and supports people in resolving issues with various agencies and organisations such as WINZ, landlords and power companies.
- We assist and support people to identify and claim their legal entitlements.
