“If there are angels on earth then these girls are them. They do a marvellous job”.

“Doctor said you just can’t go past WesleyHaven, it’s the carers, they are often there long term, they are very happy in their work and he recommended it highly.”
Resident
“A small room is fine because when you are old she doesn’t want to have too many things to remember so small is good.”
Resident’s Relative
“The grounds are nice, beautifully kept, we go for walks in the warmer months. The gardens are so nicely looked after.”
Resident
“I chose Wesleyhaven because of all my friends here from the valley. I know a lot of the residents here.”
Resident
“I’ve enjoy it immensely. I like the caregivers here. They’d do anything for you. I like the meals, one of the reasons I had to come was I wasn’t cooking too well at home on my own. It’s very peaceful because we’re tucked away in the bush, it’s so quiet here.”
Resident
“When I went to Hutt Valley Hospital the doctor "better to go into a home, if you don’t I’ll get a court order". So my daughter went round seven homes in the Hutt and she said "you’d be better off in this one Dad.”
Resident
“Clean and practical, all sort of tucked away, not near a busy road. You wake up in a morning in here, and don’t know if its Sun or Wed. They’ve got lots of nice girls on duty here.”
Resident
“Food, good choice of food, sausages, meatloaf, everyday a choice of two. Don’t have to go to the supermarket or do the washing up afterwards. I like my bedroom in here too, it’s small but I like it. One of these girls will take me for a shower. That wouldn’t happen everyday when I was at home alone.”
Resident
“The staff are all good. Wouldn’t say a word against any of them. They’re all really good. They all seem to enjoy their job, that’s the most important thing. In any business or organisation you have to enjoy what you do.”
Resident
“You get an amazing view, at night time all the street light up like a Christmas tree, that bus service is superb. Get on the bus, sit anywhere you like. Every 15 minutes it goes.”
Resident
“I knew a lot of people here, I decided to come and I haven’t regretted one moment. I feel at home here, I feel they look after me, I was sick and they had to put me into the (continuing care) hospital, they looked after me there and they look after me here (rest home), but I’m a diabetic and if my sugar’s low they go and jump to it and I appreciate that.”
Resident
“Our coordinator, she’s a registered nurse. If we need help we can get her straight away. If not there’s another one down there that can come up so we are under good care. And I’m happy. My daughter set up my room.”

“It’s more social here than when I was in my own home by 10,000 times. Oh yes. When I first came in it was Christmas and I had people from all round the island call into see me when they were down here. It was my birthday the other day and I had some friends from Te Puke come into see me.”
Resident
“They are very good. They don’t rush. They respect mum’s likes and dislikes because even with short term memory loss she is fiercely independent. She’s got her own little room with all her things from home.”
Resident’s Relative
“I do feel on the whole they are very good. It’s the carers that make it rather than the building. They all know mum by name which is so important. They make a point of using her name even if they are passing her in the hallway at least she hasn’t forgotten her own name even if she’s forgotten most other things.”
Resident’s Relative
“The staff are all really good, I think we’ve got a really good team here, we don’t have a high staff turnover, casuals come and go but the permanent staff seem to stay on which is really good. Some people stay over 20 years.”
Staff Member
“I think the residents get a fuller life, they appear to be very happy. A lot of them have come from living alone and they really enjoy the company, we’ve had a couple that have just come in for respite care, one’s just turned a hundred, and they’re staying permanently now, one’s just gone home, she’ll be back in a couple of weeks, before she came in she was very morbid, and they can’t believe the spring in her step now since she’s been here, so they’re looking at sending her back here and she wants to come back here.”
Staff Member
“It’s awesome, and they feel good too, they come in and this is pretty much the end of the road and they get this new lease on life.”
