What people have to say about us ...
Strand and Deckston are Stage Two Rest Homes which respectively provide care for up to 54 and 31 elderly people who require assistance with their day to day living activities. Wesley Hospital caters for up to 33 residents requiring full nursing care. Also on site are 25 villas and 5 town house units available for rent. The Village is situated in a lovely garden setting at the top of Rata Street in Naenae.
Residents are encouraged to make their rooms or own space homelike by bringing in their own items of furniture and possessions.
A double room in each rest home is occasionally available but most rooms accommodate one person only. There are only a limited number of single rooms at Wesley Hospital where most residents are accommodated in shared rooms. At this level of care, we find that shared accommodation can have significant benefits for some residents, particularly in regard to increased and varied interaction with staff, other residents and visitors.
Pets are also welcome visitors. We have an aviary on site, regular visits from ‘Canine Friends’ and of course the resident cat in each facility rules all.
Each of the two rest homes has its own unique culture and people have a choice as to which one appeals to them.
Each facility has a large communal lounge with a piano, organ, Sky TV, stereo, DVD and video player.
Small quiet lounges are located on each floor of both rest homes provide space where residents can take some time out or entertain visitors. We also have an extensive collection of large print books.
Residents who wish to smoke may do so in an allocated smoking area in the rest homes. Smoking is not permitted at Wesley Hospital.
Wesleyhaven Village is managed by staff who genuinely care about and have expertise and experience in caring for elderly people. The wider Wesleyhaven Village is the responsibility of the Operations Manager who is also a Registered Nurse, with each facility under the day to day management of its own Care Co-ordinator. The majority of staff are Caregivers who receive ongoing education from our staff educator and others to ensure they give the highest standard of care. The health needs of residents are overseen by the Co-ordinators and other Registered Nurses in consultation with the resident’s Doctor.
Residents are welcome to retain the services of their own GP or to request care from one of Wesley’s visiting GP’s from Naenae Medical Centre. These GP’s conduct a weekly clinic and are on call 24 hours a day for emergencies. If retaining your own GP, please ensure that they are prepared to carry out home visits to you at Wesleyhaven. Please also note that you will be responsible for any cost above that which WesleyCare pays for their GP visits.
Physiotherapy services are by referral to the Community Physiotherapist.
Dental services are arranged as required either with the resident’s dentist or the Hutt Hospital Dental Department. This is an additional cost, however prices are very reasonable.
Families and/or friends are requested to escort residents to hospital and community appointments wherever possible.
The cost of podiatry is covered by individual residents but is very reasonable compared to what is paid in the community. Our consultant Podiatrist visits six weekly and will see most residents 12 weekly as required.
A Hearing Therapist visits two monthly to check hearing aids and attend to any hearing problems.
Activities co-ordinators in both Rest Homes and to a lesser extent the continuing care hospital organise a wide variety of outings, craft activities, visits to places of interest and social activities on a very regular basis. Residents choose their own level of participation.
Visits to the library, the collection of library books and a 'talking books' service for the visually impaired can be arranged.
The hairdresser visits fortnightly and provides cuts, sets and perms. Although this is an additional cost, the rates are very reasonable. Alternatively visits out to the hairdresser or barber can be arranged.
Residents get to enjoy real home cooking as each facility has its own kitchen and kitchen staff with delicious baking and all meals prepared on site. Because meals are so eagerly anticipated by residents, we aim to provide high quality, nutritious, interesting and tasty meals. Our cooks like to talk with each resident about their preferences and ensure there is always plenty to eat. The main meal of the day is lunch with two choices of main dish available. Soup and a light meal are offered at teatime.
Visitors are welcome to share mealtimes with residents. Where possible, please allow one day’s notice for the kitchen staff, but we are usually able to accommodate individuals at short notice. Lunch is available at a cost of $6, and evening meal for $3.50. Please arrange payment at Reception.
Meal times are:
Breakfast 7.30am – 8.30am Morning tea 10.00am.
Lunch 12 noon to 1pm.
Afternoon tea 2.30pm.
Evening meal 5pm – 6pm.
Supper 8.00pm.
Regular church services are taken by our Chaplain who is available to visit with residents as required.
Representatives of different faiths from local parishes also visit regularly to provide support. We also encourage family and friends to assist residents to attend their own church where this is possible.
Staff will readily undertake reasonable shopping requests and shopping trips out are encouraged. We can arrange for the delivery of the Dominion Post, at the resident’s cost. We have a small shop at Strand Home which sells toiletries, confectionery etc and is open Mon – Fri 10.30am. to 11.30am.
The Activities Programme is facilitated by our Recreation Co-ordinators in each facility in consultation with the Hospital Occupational Therapist.
Mobility, enjoyable exercise and activities suitable for each individual’s needs are encouraged in a varied programme. Our Recreation Co-ordinator oversees the programme and assesses each person’s needs. Residents have the opportunity to spend special one-on-one time with the Recreation Co-ordinator or volunteer, or to join in group activities and outings.
Some of the regular activities offered are drives, shopping trips, lunches out, concerts, cooking, bowls and other games, music and sing-a-longs, Friday afternoon Happy Hours. Special visits are arranged to places or events of interest such as the Botanical Gardens, Te Papa, the Ballet or Circus. The Christmas Events Calendar is always very full and eagerly anticipated.
Each resident receives an individual copy of the month’s activity sheet. The activities programme is a happy enjoyable experience for all who choose to take part.
We have our own laundry service for residents’ personal clothing. We do ask that residents or their family ensure that all clothing and belongings are labelled to minimise the risk of loss. We can also arrange for dry cleaning if required.
Personal Money
Whilst small amounts of cash can be kept by residents, we advise that this is kept in a locked drawer or in the office safe. We also advise that larger amounts are kept at reception via the Residents Trust Account for safe keeping
Accounts
The person responsible for a resident’s financial affairs receives an invoice for our services monthly. Payment is made by automatic payment.
Wesleyhaven is about people, not profit, and every attemot is made to keep charges reasonable. The average residential care price per day is $98.54 (including GST). However, to find out if you are eligible for a subsidy please contact Work and Income New Zealand. The additional cost of Hospital Care above this amount is paid by the Government, providing the resident has been assessed by a Needs Assessment Agency to require this level of care.
Please note that a two week notice period or payment of full fees is required in lieu of notice should a resident decide to transfer elsewhere.
As this is the residents’ home, visitors are encouraged to pop in whenever it suits.
We do request that all residents appoint an Enduring Power of Attorney for both Property/Financial Matters and for Personal Care and Welfare.
We facilitate a meeting with every resident, invited family member/friend and staff members every six months to discuss the resident’s care and wellbeing. This time provides an opportunity for discussion, and input into the resident’s lifestyle plan for ongoing care.
We welcome feedback from residents, friends and relatives in regard to the care we provide. It is always positive to hear that we are meeting the needs of residents and their friends and family. We undertake an annual satisfaction survey to formally seek feedback, however we encourage residents and/or their families to discuss any concerns they have at any time with staff. If there are concerns we would rather know about them so that we can address them for you. Email us; mailto: info@wesleyca.org.nz
