What people have to say about us ...
Wesleyhaven is managed by staff who genuinely care about and have expertise and experience in caring for older people. Staff take great care and pride in their excellent standard of service where each person’s unique needs, tastes, safety and comforts are top priority. Whilst people live independently in the villas and Ricketts Court units, they experience the same friendly and caring attitude (and some informal oversight) by staff. Wesleyhaven Village provides a continuum of care, so that if a person’s needs change, they can move to the required level of care whilst maintaining their friendships and be cared for by familiar staff.
WesleyCare welcomes tenants to the Ricketts Court Units and Villas and wishes them much happiness and contentment in their life within the Wesleyhaven Village community.
Rules and regulations are minimal; however, WesleyCare does ask that tenants follow the guidelines and meet the normal expectations and courtesies of shared living in order to preserve the harmonious community spirit of Wesleyhaven.
WesleyCare hopes that people will associate in many ways with others on the complex and thus support our community for the benefit of themselves and others who reside at Wesleyhaven. We also encourage you to maintain (or establish) links with people in the wider local community.
WesleyCare has 5 fully self-contained 2 bedroom rental units called the Ricketts Court units and 25 Villas. Also available for rent from time to time are two spacious one bedroom flats located in the annexe at Deckston Rest Home.
All the units, offer self-contained accommodation for tenants who wish to live independently within a village environment. This environment provides opportunity for the development and maintenance of friendships as well as participation in a range of activities. In addition, the Wesleyhaven complex provides a degree of security due to community living, some informal oversight and a limited range of additional services and assistance.
The units are unfurnished to enable tenants to furnish them to their own choice. Wesleyhaven supplies a small electric range for each unit, but all other equipment and electrical appliances including a refrigerator are the responsibility of the tenant. Electrical appliances must meet normal safety standards. It is recommended that electrical appliances are checked by a registered electrician before transfer and that electric blankets are checked annually.
Please note that no structural alteration to the Villas or Flats may undertaken without consultation with, and express approval by Wesleyhaven management.
As tenant, you are responsible for all interior maintenance of the unit, including replacing mirrors, light-shades, light globes.
WesleyCare is responsible for all exterior maintenance of the unit.
Tenants are responsible for the insurance of all personal property including furnishings.
Tenants are responsible for arranging their own telephone installation and meeting associated costs.
Ricketts Court tenants are responsible for arranging their own electricity supplier, connections and payment. In the villas, where there is a meter, tenants are charged for electricity used. In those villas where there is no meter, a flat rate is charged, based on average usage.
Each unit is fitted with a smoke alarm to alert tenants and neighbours of any danger. Tenants are requested to maintain these in working order. The smoke alarm batteries are checked six monthly by WesleyCare staff and changed as required.
Fire extinguishers are not supplied. Where fire extinguishers are required, their purchase and maintenance is the responsibility of the individual tenant.
In the event of a fire tenants are advised to exit the unit immediately and notify staff to seek assistance.
Tenants are required to provide an outside rubbish bin and to place any rubbish in that bin. The bins will be emptied weekly by WesleyCare.
Tenants are required to maintain their villa or flat to an acceptable level of tidiness and cleanliness. Landlord visits may be carried out annually or more frequently if required.
The consumption of alcohol in moderation is acceptable, providing it is confined to within the villa or flat and does not create an inconvenience of any sort to other tenants, residents and/or staff.
For the safety of tenants, smoking is not permitted inside the Villas or Ricketts Court units due to the risk of fire.
The introduction of pets must be negotiated with Wesleyhaven management.
Each Ricketts Court flat has an adjacent covered carport. Parking for villa tenants can be arranged with Management.
Ricketts Court flats have capacity for a washing machine. If the tenant is unable, or prefers not to wash heavy items (sheets/towels), they may be sent off site for laundering for a small charge.
Villa tenants have access to communal laundries on site in Blocks 4 and 7.
A limited cleaning service may be available on request at a cost of $16.00 per hour. Prospective tenants should note that if they are incapacitated in any way, they may be eligible for assistance with personal care and/or cleaning. Tenants should check with their GP. A referral would need to be made to the Needs Assessment Agency, Sigma (or Life Unlimited for those aged under 65 years of age), for an independent assessment. Any such arrangements are independent of WesleyCare.
Meals can be provided at Strand Home in the event of a tenant being unable, or preferring not to, prepare his/her own main meal of the day.
Tenants are of course welcome to retain the services of their own GP or request a transfer to the WesleyCare GP’s who hold weekly clinics. It is important to ascertain what your GP’s arrangements are for home visits and after hours requirements.
Wesley Hospital nursing staff may be available to provide some advice in the event of any health emergency, although as tenants live independently, there is no staff assigned to the rental units. Therefore, if the matter is extremely urgent you are advised to ring for an ambulance, as Wesleyhaven response times cannot be guaranteed.
As the villas and Ricketts Court units are not staffed, any tenant wishing to identify Wesleyhaven as a first contact for alarm response, must arrange with the monitoring company for a second contact to be automatically notified if the alarm has not been de-activated within an agreed time frame. These arrangements must be discussed in person with the Operations Manager and documentation provided for reference by the relevant Wesleyhaven staff.
WesleyCare strongly advises prospective tenants to ensure that they have in place a legally appointed Enduring Power of Attorney for both property/financial matters and personal welfare.
Subject to interest, Indoor bowls are played at the Recreation Hall on Monday afternoons.
You will receive a copy of the monthly activity sheet which outlines a variety of stimulating and interesting programmes or activities to choose from.
Tenants have access to, and are encouraged to join in many of the social and recreational activities on the Wesleyhaven complex.
A Residents Committee is elected annually with representatives from Strand Home, Deckston Home, Villas and Ricketts Court Flats. The committee works with management to promote the well being and satisfaction of all residents and tenants. Members of the committee receive suggestions, ideas and complaints from residents and tenants, which are discussed and actioned at the monthly meetings.
Services of various denominations are arranged on a regular basis and held at Strand Home.
The podiatrist visits the complex six weekly and this service is available by appointment, for an additional cost.
A fortnightly hairdressing service is available within the complex for an additional but reasonable cost.
Mail is delivered to the Wesleyhaven reception daily Monday to Friday – and distributed to the rental units and rest home/hospital residents. There are no weekend deliveries.
Arrangements for deliveries should be made directly with the Newspaper office.
There is a small shop within Strand Home, stocked and managed by the Residents Committee with the assistance of Wesleyhaven management. Usual opening hours are 10.30a.m. – 11.30a.m Monday to Friday.
CityLine buses run frequently with the bus stops located just beyond the main entrance of Wesleyhaven Village.
Tenants have the opportunity to participate in a shopping outing once a week to either Upper/Lower Hutt or Stokes Valley in the Wesleyhaven van driven by a volunteer.
Monthly van outings are also arranged with a small fee requested as a contribution toward costs.
Tenants who use mobility scooters are asked to leave these at the entrance of the rest homes and hospital as their use inside can pose a safety risk for frail elderly.
Visitors are very welcome. WesleyCare requests that tenants and visitors respect the privacy and other needs of neighbours.
In the event of a Villa or Ricketts Court tenant temporarily requiring increased care, arrangements may be made for 48 hours in either Wesley Hospital or one of the Rest Homes. This is dependent on availability of beds and staff. This would be charged at the relevant daily rate of care in addition to the normal unit rental.
In the event of a tenant becoming too frail to continue living in the villa or flat, priority and assistance will be given to obtain appropriate care, in a place of the tenant’s choice either on the Wesleyhaven complex or elsewhere.
In this instance, you or your family would be advised to contact Work and Income to ascertain whether you were eligible for a government subsidy.
