Jono’s  eyes light up as he reflects on the progress he has made in less than a year of working as a professional foster parent with Wesley Community Action (WCA),  “I love my work..... I have a passion for what I’m doing”.

For B, a young teenager for whom Jono provides foster care, the positive changes have been equally important. Community Pantry Planned for Porirua

Tags: , , , ,

For the past 16 years Wesley Community Action has run an emergency food bank in Cannons Creek, Porirua,  and now there are exciting plans to transform the food bank into a community garden and  pantry.

The Community garden and pantry will be a place where people can come to grow and harvest fruit and vegetables, share their skills and learn about gardening, cooking and healthy eating all while building strong community links.

The Community Pantry sees food as not only an end in itself but also a means to achieving broader goals of empowerment and health. It will be a place where everyone can contribute to their community; where good food is made available; resources, skills and knowledge are shared; and people can gain a strong sense of pride and value in their part within the community.

Principles:

    * WCA will focus organisation support in areas where it has expertise
    * WCA will Link into existing coordination initiatives
    * WCA will not duplicate other initiatives that are well positioned to respond
    * Most likely value of WCA’s expertise will be in the second phase (3 – 6 months +)
